Pine forest and mountain vegetation in Mascota, Jalisco, home to native wildlife and plants

Flora and Fauna of the Region

A fascinating setting for your stay at Sierra Lago

Sierra Lago is located in the municipality of Mascota, Jalisco. Despite how it sounds in Spanish (mascota means "pet"), the name has nothing to do with household animals: it comes from the Teco language, «Amaxacotlán Mazacotla», meaning "Place of Deer and Snakes." During the Spanish conquest it was also known as the Valley of the Deer. That tells you just how important the region's wildlife, and by extension its plant life, has always been.

Mascota has a population of just over 8,000 and sits in northwestern Jalisco, about 1,200 meters (roughly 3,900 feet) above sea level, strategically located between Guadalajara, the state capital (120 kilometers away), and Puerto Vallarta, one of Mexico's most famous vacation destinations (about 100 kilometers away).

Mascota lies on a plateau of the Sierra Madre Occidental, a region of beautiful scenery where valleys, mountains, forests, lagoons and rivers create striking contrasts. The average annual temperature is around 22 °C (72 °F), and from June to October the rains bring cool, refreshing afternoons. This privileged climate creates perfect spots for a family picnic or a nature walk.

This natural wealth is represented by more than 100,000 hectares (about 250,000 acres) of forest, dominated by pine, oak and tepehuaje trees. The area's mineral resources include deposits of gold, silver, lead, zinc, limestone, mercury, gypsum, fluorite and talc.

Among the animal species found here are deer, rabbits, squirrels, skunks, wild boar, coatis, raccoons, the onza (a small, puma-like wild cat), armadillos and doves.

A few other interesting facts about the region: local farms grow corn, sorghum, wheat, chickpeas, forage oats, alfalfa, beans, barley, potatoes, peas, green chiles, avocados, peaches, sweet limes, guavas and limes. Ranchers raise beef and dairy cattle, pigs, horses, goats, sheep, poultry, and keep beehives. Local fishing includes largemouth bass, mojarra and boquinete.
