Where to Go in Mexico in December

June 1, 2025

Winter in Mexico begins on December 21 and ends on March 20. Because of the country's geography, its long coastlines and its proximity to the Caribbean, temperatures in some states barely change throughout the year; however, in certain regions the weather turns cold and temperatures can drop to 0 °C (32 °F). Rain is scarce, and in central Mexico temperatures fall at night and in the early morning.

If you're looking for vacations in Mexico's top tourist spots, there is something for every taste, need and budget. Remember to book ahead and follow each destination's health guidelines; otherwise you could be turned away from some activities.

Winter is one of the most anticipated seasons for many people, the perfect excuse to wear beanies, jackets and gloves and sip warm drinks. And if you can't stand the heat, you probably love this time of year.

Although Mexico is known for its mild climate year-round, some destinations let you truly feel winter: nighttime snowfall, cozy cabins, bone-chilling fog and below-freezing temperatures that will have you craving a good mug of ponche (Mexican fruit punch) or coffee. Keep reading to discover beautiful destinations to visit in Mexico this winter.

Here is a list of some of the best places to visit in Mexico during the holiday season:

Mexico City

If you'd rather be in a big city, Mexico City is an amazing option. In December you'll find Christmas trees for sale in the parks, and the city is beautifully decorated with lights and poinsettias. The weather is colder, so you'll want a warm jacket and gloves. Throughout December the city usually sets up free ice-skating rinks and holiday activities, although these were scaled back during the pandemic. Don't let that stop you: grab a hot chocolate at the churrería El Moro, then go admire the Palacio de Bellas Artes or the Monumento a la Revolución.

Mascota, Jalisco

Want to stay in a peaceful cabin in December? Sierra Lago is one of the most Christmassy spots in the state of Jalisco, with winter lows that can reach 6 °C (about 43 °F) and plenty of activities to enjoy. Retreat to your cabin and take in the pastoral scenery around the serene lake nestled in the mountains. Relax and enjoy the comforts of a resort and spa while breathing the fresh mountain air and treating yourself to delicious food. You can go hiking, horseback riding and much more. If this holiday season you want to reconnect with yourself, your loved ones and nature, this is the place.

Nevado de Toluca, State of Mexico

This spot is ideal for an Instagram-worthy photo: the landscape is both imposing and sublime. Go between December and February and you'll find snow everywhere. Bring sunscreen, boots, water and energy bars for the hike, and wear a sweater, jacket and gloves so the cold doesn't get the best of you.

The goal is to reach the volcano's crater, but if you're not up for the hike, you can enjoy the lagoon right beside it. It is open to the public, but bring a face mask, since the site gets very crowded.

Valle de Bravo, State of Mexico

Just 140 km (about 87 miles) from Mexico City, this is one of the busiest winter destinations. Enjoy the simple winter pleasure of a bonfire by the lake to beat the nighttime chill of 10 °C (50 °F) or lower. There are plenty of activities: explore the lake by boat, go paragliding and stroll its colonial streets lined with tile-roofed, wood-beamed houses. If you take a boat ride, follow all hygiene and distancing guidelines.

Real de Catorce, San Luis Potosí

This "ghost town," located in the northern part of San Luis Potosí, offers scenery worth photographing. To tour it, you'll need to hire a Willy. Willys are 1960s jeeps, and this town is the only place where they still run. On the tour you'll learn about the history, legacy and legends of Real de Catorce.

Cobblestone streets of Real de Catorce, San Luis Potosí

The amazing thing about this destination is wandering the streets of what was once a bustling town and now preserves only traces of its past. Snow and below-freezing temperatures are typical in Real de Catorce. There are several lodging options in nearby towns and communities. It is open to the public, but departures by truck and Willy are spaced out and run at reduced capacity. You can also enjoy a range of activities, including a zip line.

San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato

One of Mexico's most romantic cities awaits you in winter. Wander its charming cobblestone streets and colorful buildings while sipping a warm ponche. Nighttime temperatures drop to 8 °C (about 46 °F), so if you love the cold, this destination is for you.
